Broken tooth or lost filling

If you have a broken tooth or a lost filling, don’t panic!
Usually these situations are irritating to the tongue and sensitive if dentine is exposed.  You probably don’t need
to call the dentist out.  Keep the area clean as best you can, and you may wish to get hold of an emergency dental kit
from the chemist to place a temporary filling in the interim.

Lost crown

Often crowns can be re-cemented easily. You might want to get hold of an emergency dental kit from a chemist, which contains a temporary glue to re-stick the crown, and then contact us to do the job properly.

Painful wisdom teeth

Partly erupted wisdom teeth can be very difficult to maintain.  Sometimes plaque gets right under the flap of gum partially covering the tooth, and this can get very sore.  In this case, clean the area more thoroughly rather than going gently, and use a chlorhexidine mouthwash or gel (brand name corsodyl) to alleviate discomfort.

Dislodged teeth due to trauma

If it’s a baby tooth and it has come out completely, try not
to worry. There will be a certain amount of bleeding and soreness, but tender loving care and pain relief will see you through until we can assess it.  If the baby tooth has been pushed up into the gum rather than being knocked out, again tender loving care and pain relief is required.

In this case the area will need careful monitoring as there is
a chance the baby tooth may have damaged the adult tooth growing beneath it. Call us for advice.

If the affected tooth is an adult tooth and has been knocked out completely, hold it by the tooth (not the root) and replace
it in the socket if possible within the first 30 minutes,
if there is any debris on the root, rinse it first.Seek dental advice urgently.

If an adult tooth has fractured across it will be sensitive due to the exposed dentine, and will require repairing,
Call us for advice.

If an adult tooth has fractured across deeply and is bleeding from the pulp (the fleshy bit inside the tooth) it will probably be very sore, especially to touch and hot and cold. The tooth will need root canal therapy and a crown to restore it.
Call us for advice.

Toothache

Pain from teeth generally indicates something is wrong and requires treatment.  Levels of pain can be variable, from a vague discomfort with biting or with hot and cold to a proper throbbing pain where you know exactly which tooth is
the cause.  Firstly take some over-the-counter pain relief.
Studies show ibuprofen tends to work best for dental pain.

Also if the pain is waking you, try and sleep with the head raised on several pillows. Contact us to book an appointment soon to get the problem checked. You can leave a message on 01371 830950 and we will contact you.

Our usual working hours are Monday-Friday 8.30am 5.30pm,
